I knew Dan Cuashman in his last years and he said he would constantly run into natives on his walks to and from the post office who would ask him if Big Joe was based on so-and-so from Box Elder or Browning or Ft. Belknap. He´d just say there´s a little of both of them. The chracters are well-drawn: Louis and his wife trying to do better, Joe´s sister and a lot oof other characters. Unforteebale seens of trying to impress the Haskins´with a fake toilet, the big horse race and Hy Slager. The Elvias movie bombed because it made Joe a good guy. The Broadway play, ¨Whhop-Up¨never was reviewed because of a NYC newspaper strike and closed quickly. Never have been able to locate ethe book or score.
