Recently my second book about the comparison of Rome and the United States was published (in German: Gott zeigt auf Amerika). Comparing more than 400 years convinces us to be in the late republic time of Rome, about 90b.c. - the US empire has to come in about 60-70 years. You´ll find George Washington, the colonies, the war of Indenpendance, Monroe-declarat in or the Alamo, WW I + II, Vietnam, the Kennedys an Gulf War in Roman history and much more - and allways 2100 years before. No secrets, no mystery: the facts are there, for everyone to see. I´m looking for an editor to bring the books to the anglish-america n market. For the moment I put some english and spanish coments on facebook "Gott zeigt auf Amerika". I would apreciate anz help or discusion about this item. Best regards Dess Schomerus

I think it's economics, for both us and the Romans. From what I understand, Rome got into unsustainable foreign wars that cost a lot of money, much like we do now. But when they eventually conquered every worth conquering, the money stopped pouring in, and the system collapsed. America got rich on exploiting natural resources and whaling (you don't hear much about whale oil these days, but it was big business). Our success has given us a sense of entitlement or being chosen by God, both of which are dangerous sentiments. Economically, too many on Wall Street are sucking too much money out of the system and contributing very little in return. We need to allocate capital efficiently, but there are too many abuses, which led to the financial crisis. Business are making record profits, yet unemployment is high. If we want to keep this country great we need to stop Wall Street plundering and revive the middle class and upward mobility to the middle class.

Very interesting article. I am in agreement with your comparison of modern day America with ancient Rome. My only concern is the implication that somehow Christianity is part of the problem. I am a Christian and while I pray for my nation and believe that only through faith will we return to being what the founding fathers envisioned us being, I do not support forcing anyone to convert. One of the basics of Christianity is that it is a choice made by the individual, not a dictate. I know that some try and force their faith on others but that is a minority, not the majority. Most of the problems that I see with our nation stem from greed, not faith.
