Craig Michael Schwehr, 39, who had taught school and coached track at Melstone, died Feb. 9, 2012, of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
He was born Nov. 7, 1972, and his family settled in Melstone. He played basketball and competed as a distance runner in track and field. He married Kelli Goffena on Aug. 1, 1993.
In the spring of 1997, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. When a severe infection left him on dialysis, he completed a teaching degree in high school mathematics at Montana State University Billings between dialysis sessions.
He started his first teaching job at his alma mater, Melstone High School. In his second year of teaching, he took over the Melstone track program.
Survivors include his wife; two children, Michael and Madison of Lavina; his father, Don Schwehr of Walla Walla, Wash.; his mother, Mary Lou Vaughan of San Angelo, Texas; a sister, Karla MacCatherine of Billings; and brothers, Timothy of Sasebo, Japan, and Nicholas of Atlanta, Ga.
Visitation was Feb. 15, followed by rosary and vigil at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with committal in Holy Cross Cemetery and luncheon to follow.
