Eldor “El” Carl Mettler, 81, of Billings, who was a motorcycle police officer for 20 years in Los Angeles, died Sunday morning, Feb. 12, 2012.
He was born in Hogeland to Fredrick and Olga Mettler on March 27, 1930. He lived in Billings until he was 8 years old and then moved to Reed Point to become a ranch hand for Will and Mary Hall. He graduated from Stockade School, a one-room school with two students.
He entered the Navy in November 1951 and was stationed on a naval destroyer. The highlight of his military service was walking on the Great Wall of China.
He returned to Billings and married Joyce Baumgartner. They had two children, Jason in 1954 and Joy in 1955, who both have died.
While in Billings, he joined the Billings Police Department. After five years, the family moved to Los Angeles, and he joined the Los Angeles Police Department. He rode a motorcycle beat for 20 years until an on-the-job injury forced him into retirement.
Mr. Mettler moved to Seattle for three years and then moved back to Billings in 1986. In 1987 he married Maggie MacRae and became the father figure for five adult children.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, Evelyn Carlton; a brother, Mike Mettler; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held in May. Arrangements are by Cremation and Funeral Gallery.
