John Carter Lattimer

John Carter Lattimer, 68, of Billings, former Montana state commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6774, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012.

He was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on Aug. 7, 1943, to J.C. “Red” Young and Maxine Bradshaw. He had four sisters.

On May 7, 1971, he married Janice (Pokert) Lattimer in Reno, Nev.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He also was awarded the Gallantry Cross.

He was a sergeant in the Montana Army National Guard and the Montana Army Reserve, and from 2007-2008 he was the VFW Post 6774 Montana state commander.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Cathy Slevira and Deborah Geiger, both of Billings, and Tammy Higgins of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Leonard McCann of Billings; sisters, Kathy Cook of Arkansas, Bonnie Marshall of Oregon and Vicki Rivera of California; and 13 grandchildren.

Services with military honors were held Feb. 27 at VFW Post 6774. Arrangements were by Cremation and Funeral Gallery.
