Alta Woosley

Alta Woosley, 90, of Billings, formerly of Wilsall, who was active in rodeo for many years, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at RiverStone Hospice.

Born Aug. 6, 1921, in Wilsall at Robinson’s Hospital, she was the fifth of seven children of Emma (Deitz) and Cott Gwaltney. The family moved to Minnesota where she started school. In about 1930 they returned to the Hill Ranch in Wilsall, and the kids at the ranch attended Latt Country School. She lettered in basketball and graduated from Wilsall High School.

She married Allen Woosley, and they celebrated their 50th and 60th anniversaries before his death in July 2005 after their 66th anniversary.

Mr. Woosley was a pickup man at rodeos, and Mrs. Woosley timed MARA, high school and college rodeos and jackpot roping. She timed the first college rodeo in Montana State University’s Field House and the College National Finals Rodeo in Bozeman. She was Montana High School Rodeo Secretary for many years.

She and her husband ranched in the Sedan area. She also refinished furniture, caned chairs, sewed, knitted, played the organ and trapped mink. In 2009, due to health problems, she made Billings her home.

Survivors include a son, Lyle Woosley of Wilsall; a daughter, Judi Fraser of Billings; a sister, Pearl D’Ewart of Wilsall; a brother, Bob Gwaltney of Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were March 10 in the Wilsall Community Church. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Wilsall Community Scholarship Fund or the Sedan School Refurbishing Fund.
