James Patrick “Pat” McDonnell, 65, of Billings, who had operated a concrete asphalt business in Arizona, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 7, 1946, in Lewistown, the son of Milton “Sam” and Nileen McDonnell. His elementary school years were spent in Hobson on the family farm. In 1961 the family moved to Billings, then returned to Lewistown in 1963 where he completed his high school education.
He served four years in the Navy, including one year in Vietnam. He served on the USS Virgo and did special duty patrolling the Mekong Delta as a river rat on a swift boat.
Upon his return to the states, Mr. McDonnell attended Montana State University, studying engineering.
He had worked in ranching, all aspects of construction, and had owned and operated a concrete asphalt business in Payson, Ariz.
Survivors include his mother, of Lewistown; a son, Shane McDonnell of Denver, Colo.; a grandson; and brothers and sisters, Andy of Livingston, Matt of Billings, Sarah Wier of Cave Creek, Ariz., Denny of Columbus, Margaret of Absarokee and Mary of Bozeman.
Services were June 12 at Dahl Funeral Chapel.
