Mary Jo Schuman, 86, who had been a registered nurse anesthetist in Billings, died Oct. 30, 2012, in Portland, Ore.
She was born May 7, 1926, to Arthur A. and Tessa (Dunn) Schulte in Casper, Wyo., the fifth of six children. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine in 1948 as a registered nurse and went on to advanced study as an anesthetist. She later taught nursing and anesthesia at the University of Minnesota.
In later years, she worked as a registered nurse anesthetist at Billings Deaconess Hospital and was on call for smaller hospitals and clinics in the area.
She married Marcel Lou Schuman on April 29, 1961, at St. Anthony’s Church in Casper. Into retirement, she stayed active in Billings as a volunteer hospice nurse, a quilter, bridge player and square dancer.
After her husband died in 2004, she remained in Billings until 2009 when she moved to Portland, where her three children and a brother lived.
Survivors include a brother, Arthur A.. Schulte Jr.; daughters, Maureen Schuman and Diane Healey; a son, Leo Schuman; and four grandchildren.
A vigil service was held Nov. 4 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass was Nov. 5 at Holy Rosary Church.
