LITTLETON, Colo. — Dorothy Jean Schieno Nelson, 86, who was born in Australia, died Dec. 17, 2012.
She was born May 16, 1926, to Stan and Christine (McLeod) Bensted on May 16, 1926, in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. She grew up with four siblings, swimming in the ocean near the Great Barrier Reef. She met an American Military Police officer, Mike Schieno, and married him on Feb. 19, 1944.
She then boarded a ship and sailed to San Francisco, then boarded a train to Billings to meet her husband’s large Italian family. She worked as a retail clerk for Skaggs Drug Center until 1973, when she resigned to care for Mr. Schieno, who had been diagnosed with cancer. He died Dec. 11, 1974.
After his death, she married Dwight Nelson, who also lost his life to cancer. Recently, she had been living near grandchildren in Colorado.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Rudolph and Kathy Watson; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She had requested no funeral service. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 22 at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
