Keith C. Markegard, 97, of Billings, who had worked for Pierce Packing for 63 years, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013 at St. Vincent Healthcare.
He was born Sept. 16, 1915, to John and Jennie Pierce Markegard in Bucyrus, N.D. He was raised with five siblings on the family farm.
After high school, he attended Carrier Refrigeration & Air Conditioning in Chicago, Ill., receiving his license in 1936. He came to Billings and started working for his Uncle Fred Pierce at Pierce Packing. He was chief engineer, held numerous patents and served as vice president.
In the 1930s, he and a brother, Curtis, traveled to California to pick fruit to make money to help save the family farm. They also brought fruit home so their mother could can.
He married Frances Wagers on July 9, 1940. They had three children and later divorced.
On Jan. 10, 1969, Mr. Markegard married Artie Lee Maycox and added to his family her three children: Mitch, Marcia and Marlene. They spent the next 41 years together dancing and traveling in their motor home.
Survivors include Harvey K. Markegard of the Philippines, Susan Markegard Buys of Billings and Rodney Markegard of Billings; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Cremation & Funeral Gallery, 29 Eighth St. W.
