Arthur (Arkadius) Schanz, 82, of Billings, who immigrated to Montana from Russia by way of Germany, died at RiverStone Hospice on Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 7, 1930, to Christian and Julitta Schanz in Speyer, Ukraine, Russia. In his early childhood, he and his family traveled by wagon from the Ukraine to Germany. He worked there as an apprentice cabinetmaker to help support his mother and younger brother.
In 1951, they sailed from Germany on a U.S. military ship and arrived at Ellis Island before making their way to Ryegate to reunite with relatives. He later moved to Billings.
He married Rachel Ponce, and they raised three daughters. He had built houses throughout the Billings area.
Survivors include his wife, of Billings; three daughters, Angie Roe of Billings, Jacqueline Warden of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Julie Schauber of Billings; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Christian of Montgomery, Ill.
Services will be held at Cremation & Funeral Gallery, 29 Eighth St. W., at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
