Velda Laverne (Christensen) Desmul, 95, who had nine children and was married for 63 years, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014.
She was born in McIntosh, S.D., on Sept. 24, 1918, the daughter of Thorwald and Elsie “Alvina” (Pedersen) Christensen. Two years later, her father abandoned the family.
Following graduation from high school at 16, she and her mother moved to Omaha, Neb., where she attended business college on an academic scholarship. She married Leonard Desmul on Oct. 17, 1941, in Our Lady’s Chapel of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Cathedral in Omaha, Neb. He died April 30, 2004.
Mrs. Desmul was a member of St. Pius X Parish. She had received care from Rocky Mountain Hospice, especially Robin Rasmussen and Linda Gerondale.
Survivors include sons, David, Bill of Buckley, Wash., and Leonard “Bud” of Kalispell; daughters, Jennifer Jean Desmul of Spokane, Wash., Diane Hunter of Billings, Mary Randall of Belle Vernon, Pa., and Karen Miller of Four Corners, Wyo.; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A mass of celebration of life was pending at St. Thomas Moore Church in Spokane, Wash. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Billings. Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery.
