Services were held March 26, 2014, for Marguerite (Fox) Holmes, 94, who had been head custodian for the Laurel School District for 20 years.
She was born Nov. 16, 1919, on a farm near Springfield, Minn., the third of nine children of George T. Wendt and Marie (Roeser) Wendt. Her early education took place in a one-room country school near Springfield. She graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in 1942.
During World War II she worked at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif., before joining the Marine Corps in 1944. She was honorably discharged in 1945.
She married a fellow Marine, Edward Fox of Laurel, in December 1945, and they raised three children. Mr. Fox died in March 1971. In June 1973 she married Edward Holmes. Following a short illness, he died in July 1975.
She had worked at the Laurel refinery and provided domestic support for many local residents. She retired in 1982 as head custodian for the Laurel School District.
She bowled in several leagues and won several awards for homemade Christmas displays at her home in Laurel.
Survivors include a brother, Vic Wendt; a sister, June Wendt; three children, Diana, Gail and Neil; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held March 26 at First Congregational Church in Laurel. Inurnment with military honors followed in the Laurel Public Cemetery. Arrangements were by Cremation & Funeral Gallery.
