Robert Sump, a trucker who won a 1 million mile safety award, died at RiverStone Hospice after a short illness.
He was born in Creston, Neb., to Eric and Dora Armstrong Sump and grew up in Powell, Wyo. He enlisted in the Navy after graduation in Powell and served on the USS Bremerton.
After returning from the Navy, he married Joyce Wilson, and they had two children. They moved to Billings and he went to work for CF Freight Lines. He drove a wrecker for many years at Interstate Wrecker and DJ’s Towing.
In 1984 he married Loretta Begger and added three stepchildren, Francis, June and Tony. He went to work as a trucker for G.D. Eastlick and retired after earning a 1 million mile safety award.
He loved woodworking and made an oak cradle for his first great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta; two children, Robert and Kelly; two stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were April 7 at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
