Otter Creek protest

This from the Sierra Club, by way of the Conservation Roundtable:

What: On March 16, from 1:15-1:45 p.m., we will be gathering at the Yellowstone County Courthouse Park to show our opposition to mining coal from the Otter Creek Valley in southeast Montana. This new mine would provide dirty fuel to be shipped overseas where it would likely be burned in China’s coastal coal plants. Once burned, this coal will result in 2.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide, one the most potent greenhouse gasses, entering our atmosphere. The mine itself will lay waste to an alluvial valley and threaten the entire Tongue River Valley’s air and water quality. You will be joining Montanan’s across the state who will be participating in this statewide day of action against Otter Creek Coal Mining.

Why: On March 18, the Montana Land will have a decision to make. They have voted to lease the coal at Otter Creek twice now, but they have yet to go through with it and are starting to feel the pressure from the overwhelming majority who are in opposition to this coal mine. We need to show them that we do not want more coal mining. The mine at Otter Creek is just the tip of the iceberg as coal developers from around the country are trying to gain a foothold in the Northern Powder River Basin. Loosing Otter Creek could have dire consequences for the entire state, as it will signal that Montana is willing to ignore the science of climate change in exchange for a quick buck. Attorney General Steve Bullock and Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau understand the problems and both voted against the leasing of Otter Creek at the last meeting. We need to support their decision, and at the same time demonstrate to and board members like State Auditor Monica Lindeen that coal is a 17th century solution to 21st century challenges. We are one vote away from victory, and we need your help to get it.

Where: Yellowstone County Courthouse Park, Second and 27th Street North, Billings, Montana

We need you in the fight against King Coal now more than ever. Please join us to demonstrate your opposition to new coal mines!
