The American (opening): George Clooney plays an assassin hiding out in a mountain town in Italy who slowly discovers that killing people for a living isn’t all that spiritually rewarding. He falls for a hooker, but gunmen are on his trail in this sometimes thoughtful, not always gripping drama. R. Wynnsong 10 at 1:30, 4:20, 7:15 and 9:45.

Avatar Special Edition (18): James Cameron makes his first feature film since the 1997 Titanic, which won 11 Oscars. Like that one, this one was expensive (perhaps $300 million) and time consuming to make, and it also paid off at the box office. It’s set in the year 2154, and Americans are exploring Pandora, a moon of Alpha Centauri, by creating avatars: creature that look like the natives but are steered by remote control. PG13. Shiloh 14 at 12:30, 4:15 and 8.

Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale (2): G. This is the Kidtoons feature. Wynnsong 10 at noon Saturday and Sunday.

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (6): Chris O’Donnell and Jack McBrayer star in this critically panned 3D sequel to Cats and Dogs, with voices provided by, among others, Bette Midler, Roger Moore and Nick Nolte. Some critics say the highlight is the “Roadrunner” cartoon that precedes the main feature. PG. Shiloh 14 at 12:15, 2:30 and 4:45.

Despicable Me (9): Starring Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig. Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), who delights in everything wicked, is planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (yes, the moon!). Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all that stand in his way. But then the world’s greatest villain meets his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes. PG. Wynnsong 10 at 2:30 and 7:25.

Dinner for Schmucks (6): Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Ron Livingston star in this comedy about a rising executive who succeeds in finding the perfect guest for his boss’ monthly event, a so-called dinner for idiots. PG13. Shiloh 14 at 1:30, 4:15, 7:05 and 9:45.

Eat, Pray, Love (4): After a divorce, a woman (Julia Roberts) tries to change her life with a round-the-world trip. Also starring Javier Bardem, James Franco and Richard Jenkins. Ryan Murphy (Running with Scissors) directs and wrote the screenplay. PG13. Shiloh 14 at noon, 3, 6:05 and 9. Also at Amusement Park Drive-In.

The Expendables (5): Sylvester Stallone directed and stars in this action film about a group of mercenaries who go around taking on Somali pirate kidnappers and South American military dictators. Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger and other reliables also star, but the shoot-’em-up scenes steal the show. R. Wynnsong 10 and Shiloh 14 at 12:10, 2:35, 5, 7:25 and 9:50. Also at Amusement Park Drive-In.

Going the Distance (opening): Drew Barrymore and Justin Long star in a romantic comedy about a newspaper intern who falls in love with a New York record label employee. When she goes back to school in California, they struggle to hold the relationship together. Rated R because everybody swears a lot, but most critics aren’t laughing. R. Wynnsong 10 and Shiloh 14 at 1:50, 4:45, 7:35 and 10.

Inception (8): Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard star in this action adventure, in a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasions where a single idea within one’s mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset. PG13. Shiloh 14 at noon, 3:15, 6:30 and 9:45.

The Last Exorcism (2): This is another documentary-style horror movie, which may be enough to make viewers wish this really was the last exorcism. But more is going on here than is usual for the genre, and the tension slowly builds when a cynical minister (Patrick Fabian) runs across a possessed girl (Ashley Bell) who isn’t saved by his usual tricks. PG13. Wynnsong 10 and Shiloh 14 at 1, 3:10, 5:20, 7:30 and 9:40.

The Lottery Ticket (2): Bow Wow and Ice Cube, among others, star in a film that blends comedy and drama to tell a story about a youth in the projects who wins a $370 million lottery but has to wait over the Fourth of July weekend to cash the ticket in. PG13. Wynnsong 10 at noon, 4:55 and 9:50.

Machete (opening): Robert Rodriguez based this movie on the phony trailer that spiffed up Grindhouse, which contained his Planet Terror film. A former federal agent (Danny Trejo) is framed for an assassination attempt and goes on the run. Lots of violence and some humor is on the agenda, along with appearances by Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal, Don Johnson, Cheech Marin and Michelle Rodriquez. R. Shiloh 14 at 1:40, 4:30, 7:25 and 9:55.

Nanny McPhee Returns (3): In case you forgot that Nanny McPhee had ever been away, this is a sequel to a role created on screen in 2005 by Emma Thompson, who plays a hideous-looking nanny in charge of three unruly kids during World War II. As their behavior improves under the power of her magic cane, she starts to look better, and the viewer is expected to become increasingly charmed. PG. Shiloh 14 at 1:15, 4:10, 7 and 9:35. Also shown with open captions at 4:50 on Saturday and at 4:50 and 7:15 on Sunday.

The Other Guys (5): two mismatched NYC detectives seize an opportunity to step up like the city’s top cops whom they idolize—only things don’t go as planned. Starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, and Michael Keaton. PG13. Wynnsong 10 at 12:15, 2:45, 5:10, 7:40, and 10:10, with no 12:15 showing on Saturday or Sunday. Shiloh 14 at noon, 2:30, 5, 7:35 and 10:10.

Piranha 3D (3): Director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) managed to round up Elisabeth Shue and Ving Rhames for this 3D remake of a movie about prehistoric fish that see a group of strangers as a likely meal. The film revels in its B movie cred, with plenty of violence and nudity, all gratuitous, of course. R. Shiloh 14 at 7:25 and 9:40, with no 7:25 showing on Sunday. Also at Amusement Park Drive-In.

Salt (7): This movie stars Angelina Jolie as a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor and country. She is tested when she is accused of being a Russian spy and goes on the run. When she tries to prove her innocence, her motives are in doubt. PG13. Wynnsong 10 at 1:45, 4:25, 7:10 and 9:40.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (4): Michael Cera takes the title role as a young man trying to win the heart of a woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who has seven evil exes he must overcome. The movie is based on graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley and directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), with comic book references and video game touches. PG13. Shiloh 14 at 7 and 9:40.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (5): An epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer (Nicholas Cage) and his apprentice (Jay Baruchel) who are swept up in an ancient conflict of good and evil. And yes, the film does recreate a live-action version of the famous Disney scene in Fantasia. Amusement Park Drive-In.

The Switch (3): A New York TV producer (Jennifer Aniston) want to have a baby but doesn’t want to wait around for the right man. So she goes to an insemination party, where her best friend (Jason Bateman) switches the sperm donor’s specimen, and the resulting baby looks a lot like him. PG13. Shiloh 14 at 1:45, 4:30, 7:20 and 9:45.

Takers (2): See review, this page. PG13. Wynnsong 10 at 1:35, 4:15, 7:15 and 9:50.

Toy Story 3 (10): Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and the all-star casts of Toy Story and its sequel return for a third outing as the voices of Pixar’s beloved toys. Lee Unkrich, a co-director on Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo, takes the reins for this third film, while Little Miss Sunshine screenwriter Michael Arndt pens all the action. G. Wynnsong 10  in 2D at noon, 2:25, 4:50, 7:15 and 9:40. Shiloh 14 in 3D at noon, 2:25 and 4:50, with no 4:50 showing on Saturday or Sunday.

Vampires Suck (3): Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans) stopped being funny a long time ago. Unfortunately, the didn’t stop making movies. This time out it’s a spoof of the Twilight vampire series, but critics say you’ll find more laughs in YouTube send-ups. PG13. Wynnsong 10 and Shiloh 14 at 12:45, 2:55, 5:05, 7:15 and 9:25.
