msubiz-tim wilkinson 2 1colfullMSU Billings News Services

The stores are huge. The signs are bright and colorful. Customers come in droves.

With all that going for mega-retailers like Walmart, Home Depot and Best Buy, there is an obvious attraction for innovative and entrepreneurial manufacturers to form a partnership to sell their goods, right?

Sure, as long as that manufacturer wants to relinquish total control of manufacturing, marketing, distribution and — possibly — its entire future to that mega-retailer.

That’s the central message of a new book co-authored by a Montana State University Billings business professor that has been recently published.

Business in brief

Chamber VP named

The Billings Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau has named Alex Tyson as its vice president.
“Alex’s energy and desire to serve her hometown through building our quality of life and supporting the business community has been invaluable to the growth of our organization,” said Chamber/CVB President/CEO John Brewer.
In addition to increased administrative duties, Tyson continues her duties as community relations director, which includes member and community communications, membership sales and services and overseeing a department of four team members. Tyson has been on the Chamber/CVB team since the summer of 2007.
Prior to working at the Chamber/CVB, Tyson worked for Evening Post Publishing Co. for 13 years as a photographer, reporter, producer and anchor at KTVQ in Billings and KRTV in Great Falls. She taught Broadcasting 101 at MSU Billings helping mold a new generation of local communications students.
Tyson is a graduate of Montana State University Billings and serves as president of the MSU Billings Alumni Advisory Board as well as on the Chancellor Search Advisory Committee. In 2009, she was named one of the 40 Under 40 Rising Stars in the Chamber world by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives Association.
Tyson and her husband, Calvin, have two boys, ages 8 and 4. They love the quality of life Billings offers.

Radio stations exchanged

Connoisseur Media LLC has announced an exchange of assets between itself, Elenbaas Media Inc. and Cherry Creek Radio whereby Connoisseur Media will acquire 730 AM licensed to Billings and Elenbaas will acquire 93.3 FM, also licensed to Billings.
This will dispose of the remaining Billings assets of Cherry Creek Radio, and was covered as a part of the recent sale to Connoisseur.
“We are delighted to be able to add 730 AM to our expanding Billings cluster,” said Connoisseur General Manager Cam Maxwell. “This will make Connoisseur Media the largest radio operator in the region with six stations in the Billings market.”
In addition to 730 AM, which will have a new format, Connoisseur Media also operates the following radio stations in the Billings market: KRKX-FM,  “Big Sky Country”, at 94.1, KRZN-FM, “The Zone”, a rock station at 96.3, KWMY-FM, classic hits ”MY 105.9”, KPLN-FM, 106.7, a modern hits music station also known as “The Planet”, and KBLG-AM, a news/talk station at 910.
“The ability to carry KURL programming on an FM translator, 97.5, that began in the summer of 2008 was very popular with our Billings area audience, and now being on a 100,000 watt FM will boost our range enormously, day and night,” said Herm Elenbaas, owner of KURL radio.
“Elenbaas Media Inc. will retain the KURL call letters in the deal,” Elenbaas added. “We want to continue to use KURL considering our long history with our listeners and to reassure them that the format that they’re used to will not change except for the radio frequency.”

Applying the art of feng shui to your own life

Connie_Dillon_mug_smallBy CONNIE DILLON - For The Outpost

Mary Cavanaugh has been a Realtor for 16 years and has practiced feng shui for 13 years. The two businesses often go hand in hand. The theories behind feng shui are useful in preparing the home seller to ready a space for the market.

What is feng shui? One textbook meaning is “an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics believed to use the laws of both Heaven and Earth to help one improve life by receiving positive qi.” Mary Cavanaugh describes feng shui as being “like a dance with a great partner.” It concentrates on the flow of energy through a home, space and comfort.

Cavanaugh equates meeting another person for the first time with entering a home for the first time. Do you feel a connection?
Does the home draw you inward?

Underriner to relocate

Underriner Motors is consolidating its three lines of automobiles – Buick, Volvo and Hyundai – as well as its Used Car Division into one large showroom and service location on the eastern edge of downtown Billings.

The 12,000-square-foot dealership sits on a full city block at North 18th Street and Fourth Avenue North, 10 blocks from the center of downtown. It opens on June 21.

The Underriner Motors showroom and service center will employ 30 people and can accommodate four vehicles on the showroom floor, as well 250 vehicles on the outside lot.

The move mimics other Billings businesses such as First Interstate Bank and the Billings Food Bank in establishing roots in the developing eastern corridor of downtown.

Situated in the former Underriner Honda location, 1830 Fourth Avenue North, the site has been remodeled and updated. In March 2010, Bill and Mary Underriner opened a new Honda showroom just off of I-90 on Zoo Drive on the western edge of Billings.

“Underriner Motors has always been about more than just selling cars. Our legacy is about service, integrity, and building lasting relationships with our customers,” said owner Bill Underriner. “The new location consolidates our three car lines – Buick, Volvo and Hyundai – into one convenient shopping experience for the customer.”

The Service and Parts Department at the new location provides service for all models of Buick, Volvo, Hyundai and Honda cars. Underriner Motors offers free pickup and drop-off service for Billings customers who need to leave their vehicles for an oil change or tune-up.

The Underriner Body Shop will remain downtown on Broadway and Seventh Avenue North. The Body Shop repairs all makes and models of cars.
